To avoid common mistakes when renting or buying, read chapter 17, "Finding a New Home" in Hello! USA
In general, do not spend more than 28%-33% of your monthly income for the rental fee, parking and association fees, and insurance. If you have a lot of debts, your monthly payments should be a smaller percentage of your income.
When you apply for a lease, you may need to show your driver's license or other photo ID.
You may also need information such as:
- the name of your employer or school
- proof of income-for example, some proof of the amount you expect to earn this year
- the address where you lived before
- the name of your landlord (if you lived in the U.S.)
- local references, if possible (your employer, embassy, or sponsor)
- the name of your local bank
Note: Students may not need proof of income or references. Warning: Be sure to understand everything that should be in the lease you sign. Read chapter 17, "Finding a New Home" in Hello! USA for a list of things to look for.
