The Flu
October is the month when many people should get the influenza vaccine, or the flu shot. The flu is a virus that causes chills, aches and pains in your muscles, a sore throat, a stuffy nose, and a fever. The flu can be serious; for example, you may get pneumonia as a result of the flu.
People usually get the flu in the winter and early spring. The best way to prevent the flu is to get a flu shot. You may be able to get the flu shot at your doctor’s office or at a nearby clinic. The flu shot is especially important if you:
- are 65 years old or older
- work with older or sick people
- have a serious medical condition, such as cancer, AIDS, or heart disease.
- will be more than three months pregnant during the flu season
The influenza shot does not protect you from the swine flu. If you need to know more about the swine flu, call you doctor.
