February Sports

Sports events: The Super Bowl

The most important sports event in February is the Super Bowl. This football game is the most popular TV sports event of the year, because it decides which football team is the best for the season.

To understand the Super Bowl, you must know that: All American professional football teams belong to one league -- the National Football League (NFL). The NFL is divided into two conferences -- the American Football Conference (AFC) and the National Football Conference (NFC). At the end of the season, the best teams in each conference play each other in a series of playoff games. The Super Bowl is between the winners of these conference playoffs. To learn more, click on www.superbowl.com or www.nfl.com for details.

-------

Also in February: Spring training begins for professional baseball teams. See www.baseballamerica.com for all the news about the upcoming baseball season.

-------

The Daytona 500 car race is on February 17th. See www.daytona500.com.

To learn more about American sports such as football, read chapter 9 (“News, Sports, & Entertainment”) in Hello! USA -- a handbook for international visitors and residents -- by Judy Priven.

--------------------

You may learn more about American sports in Hello! USA, a survival guide on everyday living in the U.S. This guide explains the basic rules and terms for baseball, football, basketball, ice hockey, and soccer. It also shows sample baseball and football fields.
